Dr. Shalin Nishit Diwanji Specialist in Respiratory Medicine

Dr. Shalin Diwanji is Consultant in Respiratory and General Medicine working as a highly skilled and experienced Respiratory and General Medicine specialist with over 17 years of working experience in the medical field.

Dr. Diwanji graduated in 2006 and completed his foundation training in India. After which he moved to UK to pursue research in Respiratory Medicine. He was granted Doctor of Medicine (MD) in 2010 for research in non CF bronchiectasis. He completed higher training in Respiratory and General Medicine rotating through London Chest Hospital, The Royal London Hospital and St Barts Hospital.

He has interest in Lung cancer, acute respiratory failure and non invasive ventilation, peri operative optimization and management of respiratory disease, non CF bronchiectasis and general respiratory conditions.

Dr. Diwanji has set up Enhanced Respiratory Care Unit at London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust to provide specialist care of acute and chronic respiratory failure patients. He is also Lead Lung Cancer, and Mortality.

Dr. Diwanji is currently Principle Investigator for London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust for PHOSP-COVID trail and sub Investigator for TRIBE study for London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust.

Service Development / Management Skills

In the current post, I have developed Level 2 care unit at Ealing Hospital where initially we would care of acute respiratory failure with invasive monitoring with view to develop full medical high dependency unit in near future. This project has completed the phase one where we have developed and run unit with invasive monitoring for just under year.

I have successfully led to the development for the provision of acute ambulatory service for management of common Respiratory condition as a measure for admission avoidance and early review (within 72 hours) of acute discharges from Emergency Department. This has led to Specialist Review of patients with acute exacerbation of airways disease (COPD & Asthma) and pulmonary embolism.

I have worked with Ealing community partners to develop comprehensive service oxygen service for the Borough.

Teaching / Training

I have been Accredited in Modules 1-4 of Training the Trainers (TtT), Royal College of Physician London programme

Throughout my career, I have been involved in teaching medical students, maintaining an interest in medical education. I utilise a variety of teaching methods including problem based learning designed to facilitate active learning and a student-centred approach. Formal feedback for my teaching roles is been uniformly excellent (SOLE and RCP)

    • AAU teaching programme (Jointly run it with another Consultant Colleague)

  • Development of a novel consultant-led thoracic ultrasound training programme for respiratory SpRs to facilitate Level I accreditation

I am part of formal MRCP PACES teaching program at Northwick Park Hospital. The success rate from this course is 100% and I have consistently received excellent feedback from doctors I have taught. I actively encourage feedback

I also teach larger groups in a seminar‐based format at Northwick park hospital, again as part of a formal education program.

Finally, I am actively involved in the daily bedside teaching of medical students on the wards.

Clinical Audit

During my training, I have built upon my awareness and understanding of the importance of audit to clinical governance. In this regard, I have attended all departmental audit meetings, including morbidity and mortality meetings. In addition, I have been actively involved in a number of clinical audits designed to ensure that current practice met gold standards, including:

  1. Led Trust’s Acute Respiratory Unit Pilot and follow through National Audit for British Thoracic Society.
  2. Ambulatory PE Audit 2017 & 2018 for Northwick Park Hospital- Investigations for Unprovoked PEs; this has led to review and new pathway development post diagnosis and we are in line with New BTS guidance.
  3. Quarterly Audit and review of Lung Cancer cases.
  4. The National COPD Audit 2014 at The Royal London Hospital, and presented it at the local clinical governance meeting.

With respect to risk management, I have played an active part in the Critical Incident reporting process, and during my career have been involved in a number of clinical audits which has resulted in improved clinical care for patients.

Information Technology

I am proficient in the use of Word, Excel and PowerPoint software, skills which I have developed in particular during the course of my MD studies. I am experienced at database construction, and have had formal training in performing literature searches and internet based information retrieval. In my current Trust, PACS has recently been implemented. I am familiar with its use and use it on a regular basis in relation to the care of my patients, in conjunction with GCIS and Powerscribe software.

Interests

I have a keen interest in painting I have obtained certification from it in India. I have been playing cricket at school and University level.
